The TYPO3 project is backed by a governance structure that both encourages democratic volunteer participation, builds trust, and supports a living commercial ecosystem. It is a volunteer community backed by a not-for-profit member association, and a fully-owned service company.
We set the foundation
The TYPO3 Association guides, coordinates, and funds the long-term development of TYPO3 CMS.
We lay the groundwork for the TYPO3 Project’s strategic growth by empowering our community with infrastructure and guidance. Our decisions are always long-term oriented and consensus-driven..
We view the TYPO3 Project as so much more than a CMS. It’s a model that shows how vibrant communities, collaboration, and democratic decision-making can contribute to society at large.
Our role in the community is to funnel the income from memberships, donations, and events back into community-driven development and initiatives.
The TYPO3 Company provides support and services to the ecosystem and facilitates the development of the CMS. It is fully owned by the Association and does not offer agency services, such as creating websites.

Dieser Brief richtet sich an langjährige Gründungsmitglieder, Mitglieder, Mitwirkende und Botschafter des Open-Source-Gedankens innerhalb des TYPO3-Ökosystems.
TYPO3 ist für viele weit mehr als eine Software. Es steht für eine Gemeinschaft, die über Jahrzehnte durch Transparenz, Mitbestimmung, Offenheit und das gemeinsame Streben nach einer freien, nachhaltigen digitalen Infrastruktur geprägt wurde — bei gleichzeitigem Interesse am langfristigen Erfolg von TYPO3 als Produkt.
In den vergangenen Monaten haben verschiedene Präsentationen, strategische Aussagen und organisatorische Entwicklungen für Gesprächsstoff innerhalb der Community gesorgt. Im Zentrum steht nicht die Kritik an einzelnen Personen oder Entscheidungen, sondern die grundsätzliche Frage, wie die Zukunft von TYPO3 gestaltet werden soll — und wie die Community in diesen Prozess eingebunden wird.
Da es sich um strategische Entscheidungen von grosser Tragweite handelt, sollten diese gemeinsam mit der Community erarbeitet werden, wie es einem Free-&-Open-Source-Projekt entspricht. Die Werte Transparenz, Partizipation und gemeinschaftliche Entscheidungsfindung sollten sich entsprechend deutlicher in den offiziellen Kommunikationskanälen widerspiegeln.
Vor diesem Hintergrund werden einige Fragen öffentlich gestellt, mit der Bitte um offene Beantwortung durch die verantwortlichen Gremien im Forum, und die gesamte Community ist zur Beteiligung eingeladen.
Ausdrücklich begrüsst werden a) die offene Debatte über zukunftsfähige Modelle für Open Source im Allgemeinen und TYPO3 im Besonderen, einschliesslich daraus resultierender Entscheidungen, und b) dass Struktur und Governance-Modell der TYPO3 Association nach langer Zeit wieder hinterfragt und modernisiert werden sollen.
Die obigen Fragen sind nicht als Angriff auf einzelne Personen oder Gremien zu verstehen, sondern sollen einen konstruktiven externen Impuls liefern. TYPO3 ist dann am stärksten, wenn strategische Entscheidungen transparent kommuniziert, nachvollziehbar begründet und gemeinsam diskutiert werden.
Der geplante Dialog im Rahmen der Dialogue Days ist ein erster Schritt, doch nicht alle Interessierten können dafür — zumal in der Ferienzeit — nach Düsseldorf reisen, und selbst eine zweitägige Veranstaltung kann einen intensiven Dialog über ein derart wichtiges Thema nicht ersetzen.
Wichtig ist daher, dass sämtliche Überlegungen zu strukturellen Änderungen innerhalb der TYPO3 Association frühzeitig offengelegt und nach den Prinzipien von Open Source transparent sowie öffentlich diskutiert werden — und zwar umgehend und mit nachvollziehbarer Planung unter Mitwirkung aller Mitglieder. Die Dialogue Days sollten entsprechend terminlich reorganisiert oder neu angesetzt werden.
Open Source bedeutet nicht nur Offenheit des Quellcodes, sondern auch Transparenz in der Governance, nachvollziehbare Entscheidungsprozesse und die aktive Einbindung derjenigen, die Zeit, Wissen und Engagement in das Projekt investieren.

This letter is addressed to long-standing founding members, members, contributors, and ambassadors of the open-source idea within the TYPO3 ecosystem.
For many, TYPO3 is far more than just software. It represents a community that has been shaped over decades by transparency, participation, openness, and a shared pursuit of a free, sustainable digital infrastructure — alongside a genuine interest in the long-term commercial success of TYPO3 as a product.
In recent months, various presentations, strategic statements, and organizational developments have generated discussion within the community. The focus is not criticism of individual people or decisions, but the fundamental question of how the future of TYPO3 should be shaped — and how the community is involved in that process.
Since these are strategic decisions of major significance, they should be developed together with the community, as would be expected of a Free & Open Source project. The values of transparency, participation, and collective decision-making should accordingly be reflected more clearly in official communication channels.
Against this backdrop, a number of questions are being raised publicly, with a request for open answers from the responsible bodies in the forum, and the entire community is invited to participate.
Two things are explicitly welcomed: a) the open debate about future-proof models for open source in general and TYPO3 in particular, including the decisions that result from it, and b) the fact that the structure and governance model of the TYPO3 Association are being questioned and modernized again after a long time.
The questions above should not be understood as an attack on individual people or bodies, but rather as a constructive external impulse. TYPO3 is strongest when strategic decisions are communicated transparently, explained comprehensibly, and discussed collectively.
The planned dialogue as part of the Dialogue Days is a first step, but not everyone interested will be able to travel to Düsseldorf — especially during the holiday season — and even a two-day event cannot replace an in-depth dialogue on such an important topic.
It is therefore important that all considerations regarding structural changes within the TYPO3 Association are disclosed early and discussed transparently and publicly in line with open-source principles — promptly and with a comprehensible plan involving all members. The Dialogue Days should accordingly be rescheduled or reorganized in terms of timing.
Open source, to us, does not only mean open source code. It also means transparency in governance, comprehensible decision-making processes, and the active involvement of those who invest time, knowledge, and commitment in the project.
